When I first went up to the totem, the eagle disappeared, but nothing happened.

I went half way down the hill, summoned the eagle and went up the hill again. This time the eagle did not disappear, but took off, flew a circle around the totem and the quest completed.

Summon the eagle well away from the summit. Make sure it's with you as you approach. If you're too close when you summon it, the quest won't complete. You'll know it's worked when the eagle flies away from you and circles the totem.

I summoned the eagle (use quest item) down on the ground and walked up the hill with the bird in tow. Once I got to the top nothing happened. I walked around a little bit, inside the circle, and the bird flew off and the quest popped with the ghost's appearance.

Start your climb up the hill at 56.56 84.72

It is pretty much a straight shot up the hill from there.

Description

An explosion of life from barren soil... My companion Jerrik has described similar events happening elsewhere in the Barrens. I shall have to see this for myself, but I cannot abandon my post. Here, {name}, I will loan you my 'eyes.' My eagle companion here has served me since I was named. Please accompany him to Thunderhead Summit, where Jerrik awaits, and we will investigate. To get to the peak, follow the road east out of the Crossroads. Turn south when you reach a large stone scrawled with paintings.
