Chips off the Old Block

Chips off the Old Block is a quest for level 15-30 in Winterspring. It is step 50 of 54 in the Winterspring storyline. The quest's turn-in marker is in Winterspring at 61.9, 74.7. It rewards 5,150 experience and money. Completing it counts toward 1 achievement.

Description

My mysterious benefactors gave me more than one task. The second task took me farther south, to the Frostwhisper Gorge. I was surprised to learn that the gorge's bridge had been broken in two, preventing land travel from one side to the other.

In addition, the juvenile Frostmaul tumblers were separated from their stronger adult parents. I thought that I could defeat them in battle.

I was incorrect. I was forced to run away in shame.

Teach these tumblers a lesson, <name>. Fight them, and win.

In both the initial text and the completion text, Jadrag says the giants on the other side of the gorge are much tougher. [npc=7428]s and [npc=7429]s used to be elite and a little higher level (archived information here), but have been nerfed, apparently to make [quest=5981] easier. Now they are at the same level as [npc=50258]s and no longer elite, so at first glance what Jadrag says seems to be out of date. The "adult" giants still start out with much more HP than the Tumblers and they were considerably more work for my Shammy take down, though. Other than hunters trying to farm [npc=7446], there isn't much of a reason to go to the other side, and it's not easy to do if your character can't fly yet.

What happened to me, you ask? Listen, <class>, and listen well, for my tale is one of tragedy... I was sent here to Owl Wing Thicket to find some relics. I only made it this far before I was overwhelmed by a flurry of wings and talons. How they roared and pecked, <class>!

After this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Damn You, FrostilicusWinterspring · Level 15-30

The Frostmaul giants wouldn't have been a problem if it weren't for that damned Frostilicus. When the ground shook and the bridge broke, he and his fellow water elementals seeped out of the earth and took over the bottom of Frostwhisper Gorge, forcing the giants out. Damn you, Frostilicus!
