Is it true that this is only obtainable on heroic mode?
For those who don't know, the optional boss The Beast in Upper Blackrock Spire--a large corehound who was pretty vicious back in the day--used to have Finkle Einhorn inside of it. After defeating the boss, he'd appear there, having apparently been in its guts.
In Blackwing Descent, Finkle could be found locked in a cage behind Chimaeron, and would buff your raid if you spoke to him to start the encounter.
In regards to his knife: Finkle's Skinner, a blue dagger that could also be used as a skinning knife (and had its own RPG book lore), was a low % droprate off The Beast. In BWD he mentions that he's lost his knife.

Description

The history of this imposing fortress is long and complex. Carved into the fiery core of Blackrock Mountain by the Dark Iron clan centuries ago, and eventually taken by the black dragon Nefarian and his brood, the upper reaches of Blackrock Spire are now home to the Ironmarch vanguard.
