Not sure if it's other people looting them, or a bug or what, but the grain keeps despawning on me before I can finish killing the mob(s).
Prepare to be annoyed by other people. You can attack hawks and sprites that are carrying bags of grain, and they will drop them on the floor. Since you get interrupted when they hit you, usually some other guy comes along and "steals" your quest item.
I recommend you use an aoe stun for the sprites as they usually come in packs of 4-5 and loot the item while they are stunned or otherwise CC'd. The hawks are always alone unless you accidentally pull multiple so a single target stun / CC will likely suffice.

Description
Since you are heading south, can you try to recover some of the grain that these thieves made off with? We saw birds and sprites running off with entire bags of our best bulk stock into the fields east and south of here.

Looking for sweet grain? My father once mentioned a malted cave barley that sounds about right. If you are willing to brave the peril, there is an ancient cave at the base of the Winds' Edge south of here. There is even an old lift my father made when he would travel into the jungle.
