ok, so I was grinding Aldor rep, a good while ago, and the Illidari Bane Shard dropped from Overseer Ripmaw, I picked it up and didn't think much of it, now back in those days, this item must have not been a unique item. Since a few days later another one dropped for me.
This is when I got clever... I rushed to the questgiver in Shadowmoon Village handed that first IB-Shard in and rushed back to loot overseer Ripmaw again.
Lo and Behold, I have now both the Bane Shard AND the Demonslaying sword. My question is now, does the Bane Shard actually add attack power / spell damage from just being carried around in a bag?
If so, Hooray! :)
He drops an item that starts the quest if you kill him

What to do
Description
The shard appears to be a piece of a larger weapon. Sharp-looking runes etched into the metal glow with a menacing light. The weapon's intended purpose isn't clear to you, but it's hard to ignore. Most of the mo'arg at Legion Hold seem to be working with fragments of the same metal you hold in your hand. Perhaps one of the weaponsmiths at Shadowmoon Village might be able to tell you more about it.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
