Mercy for the Living is an Alliance-only quest for level 15-40 in Gorgrond. It rewards 4 reward items, 5,450 experience and money.
You can see that the dead were the lucky ones. Those that live wander about attacking anything not infected with these vile spores.
I cannot bring myself to slay them, but if you could bring mercy to those poor people I would be very grateful.
You will be able to choose one of these rewards:

If you didn't receive Mercy for the Living and The Secret of the Fungus quests as follow up, check your bags for Glowing Red Pod. Handing this in gives you the continuation for the 2 quests.
This is in response to some group members getting the follow up quests and some that do not.
Is there a requirement to get this quest? I got the 2 quest after turning in the first three but my party member didnt get them, is it a bug? WTF

Item facts are the current retail client’s (ItemSparse); the specialisations for a pick-one item are the ones the Blizzard quest API lists; faction and currency text is the client’s own. Lowest listed price = the US commodity auction house now.
Taken from the quest's prerequisites.
I... almost made it out. Most of us... dead. The others... they are no longer themselves. These lurching spore beasts are the cause, dragging us further into the marsh... stop them.
My entire squad is gone. Some are dead; that much is obvious. The others though... they must be further in. Go and search the bodies of my squad that you find, each will carry a small pouch of personal items. I would like to return these to their families.
Steps, storylines and map placement from the client’s QuestLine, prerequisite and QuestPOI data; neighbouring quest text is Blizzard’s own (quest API), shortened to its opening sentences.
