You do not have to use the rock when delivering the quest. He will grab you and you will be able to hand it in then. He then tosses you down by the gem <3
Two things that seem obvious but weren't so much for me, if that can be of any help : firstly the quest isn't given by Stonehead himself but by the cristal on his left, and you have to KEEP the rock over your head to pick up the quest, don't throw it away with the action button otherwise the quest isn't available anymore
