TheWoWDBCouldn't find any information if the shards rewarded by this quest bypass the cap, similar to how certain quests that reward crests will bypass their respective caps. So I decided to bite the bullet for everyone that comes to check. I can confirm that these shards will not overcap, so you will lose any shards that go over 8 (all 4 if you're at 8 already).

Thanks themaster24, that's exactly what I came here to find out. Seems rather pointless to allow you to reach the 8/8 cap before doing this quest, which means you can't benefit from the reward. Sadly, information about this is pretty thin on the ground, even for Blizzard!
Is there any way to spend these before turning in the quest if you're capped?

Now let us put that beauteous vision into practice! I will grant you a minute portion of unalloyed abundance. You, in turn, shall trade it to your fellow acolyte for one of many premium goods.
