Ok here is how I did it. Start fight with full shields up. IMMEDIATELY begin melee range thrust attacks. The opponents shield will only be at strength 2 at first... this is where you score bigger hits. When his are at full keep at melee and thrust until he begins to run away for charge. Stay still till you can shield break then IMMEDIATELY throw it and run back to melee range. Do not give him chance to shield break or charge. While his shield is at strength 2, again thrust attack keeping in melee range. Keep your own shield at strength 3. Repeat process waiting for him to try to get to charge range - shield breaking then thrusting. I did not find charge to be useful. All three kinds of opponents seem to fight the same. If your timing is good you can get his shields down enough to get some big hits without him ever being able to charge or shieldbreak you. Takes a while but worked. For the HORDE!

Great strategy was given by Deriol on another variant of this quest:
Basically:
- Start behind Valiant
- Three Shield Charges
- Begin Fight
- Charge valiant as they move to the centre of ring
- Use the 'extra' distance on the charge to curve round so you stay inside their charge range
- Shieldbreaker as you come round to close on them
- Thrust repeatedly when in melee range, recharge shield if needed
- When they pull away to get distance, repeat charge - curve round - shieldbreaker, and back to Thrust
Worked brilliantly for me, thanks Deriol!

Description
The grand melee is the most important of the tournament's competitions. Victory will not be easy, but I am confident that we will win. You must practice with your mount until the two of you work as one. It will help prepare you for the rigors of tournament combat. Go to the stables outside the pavilion, equip your lance, mount the stabled Orgrimmar wolf, and challenge the valiants. They wait in the Horde Valiants' Ring just outside our tent.
