You can keep four barrels with you at a time. Each time you throw one you can get another. You can normally only destroy seven Abominations since you can't pick up any more once the quest is done, unless you're fast enough to grab one before Liam shoots the Abomination.
There's really no point in blowing up more than four, but I do it just for the possibility of an Abomination saying "Barrel smell like gunpowder..."
That always cracks me up.

Pick some barrels all over the place and throw them on Abominations. It'll get stuck on their heads and Crowley will shoot those barrels. Simple, and very fun quest.
What an awesome quest. Lets you get revenge for those abominations guarding the slaughterhouse in Classic WoW Stratholme and the pre-BC Patchwerk wreaking havoc. Throw the barrel on 'em and watch 'em blow up into bloody pulp and green bile. Great quest.

What to do
Description
Look here, {name}. The big fat ones -- abominations, they're called -- they don't go down easy, so don't tackle them on your own. But I have an idea so crazy it might just work. Or it might get you killed, if we're not careful, I suppose. There's barrels of gunpowder beneath the sheds and by the windmills. Grab them and toss 'em right on the abominations' heads. I'll take care of the rest with this trusty old blunderbuss.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

- Hold the Line
<name>! I'm still not sure if you're alive or dead... human or worgen... I'm not even sure if I'm really awake. But THIS I am sure of... We're going to kill a great many of these motherless Forsaken.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Holding Steady
We can take it from here, <name>. Check in with Mayor Armstead. These are only a small part of the Forsaken's forces. If we don't move quickly we're going to have bigger problems on our hands. See what you can do to engage the Forsaken army at their landing location.
