You can only turn in the salt once, and the bots battle every few minutes. If your faction bot wins, you can loot a chest that spawns in the middle of the bridge once per alt per invasion. You need to collect a [item=166734], a [item=166732], and a [item=166733] on the *same* toon to create a [item=166715] (Alliance). Horde pet is similar but a spider. Details in the comments for the [item=166715].
There is a comment that you can attack the opposing faction's battle bot to help your team win sometimes...not sure what lets you do that, but it's worth trying. :-)
It seems this information is missing from this page. Yes, you can only turn in this quest once but after you hand it in, you can go kill more krolusks to get briney salt to hand in for more power for your battle bot. You do not have to sit there and watch the spider lose every time. The briney salt only lasts 10 min but you can get a bunch quickly and hand them in 10 at a time.
Was at the bot for over an hour and the friendly faction bot lost for over an hour straight, invasion and servers went down before it ever won.
Really wish they would just make it alternate because that is frustrating and a bunch of people had over an hour of their time wasted because of that.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

/way #864 41.4 40.2Map coordinates of the pins above. An area the client draws as a shape is given by the centre of its points.
Quests whose map markers the client places closest to this one on Vol'dun, nearest first. Distances are straight lines between the markers.
Flight points closest to the quest’s first objective area marker on Vol'dun:
Straight-line distances in yards between the quest’s own map markers (QuestPOI) and the client’s flight-point positions (TaxiNodes); flight paths and terrain are not modelled.
First seen in build 12.0.7.68887 (Midnight patch 12.0.7, the oldest build in our datamine).
Steps, storylines and map placement from the client’s QuestLine, prerequisite and QuestPOI data; neighbouring quest text is Blizzard’s own (quest API), shortened to its opening sentences.
