In case you don't notice them like I didn't for a long time, you need to kill the guys channeling into Arikara's shield before you can do any real damage.

No need to kill the serpent. It goes back to full health and completes the quest. You can just walk away.
Be aware that Freewind Brave does not always fight with you - he didn't with me. I did it as a 44 Hunter with a bear pet, I concentrated on killing Arikara and spamming Mend Pet so my bear didn't die. As soon as I saw any of the ancestral grimtotem's I set them as my target and kept the bear on Arikara. I did this because I saw the quote mentioned in another comment.
I found it quite ironic that this big powerful 'helper' would help kill all the mobs leading up to this but not a thing on this.

What to do
Description
I am familiar with these artifacts. I believe that they were brought here by Magatha Grimtotem herself. But she's not amongst the Grimtotem on Darkcloud Pinnacle. She disappeared right after she arrived, and no one knows where she is now. Maybe we can find out. Take the rattle, the writ, and the drum out to Arikara's Needle. If my guess is correct, the wind serpent will appear again. You'll have to defeat it to gain knowledge of where Magatha is hiding.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
