TheWoWDBIt seems the only way you can start this quest is by saving the Captured Protectorate Vanguard when he is fighting the gladiator. After killing the gladiator you will then see the vanguard has a quest for you. You can only do it when he fights the gladiator also. any other mobs and he just despawns.

Seems if you kill the 4 assassins in the area, a few minutes later the gladiator spawns. Tried this twice and it worked both times. Then just kill the gladiator and you can get the quest of the friendly guy

1. Escape from the Staging Grounds
• Travel to the Ethereum Staging Grounds, in Netherstorm, to coords 56, 37.
• Locate an [npc=20452] near those coords and wait for it to say, "Bring out the gladiator!" In less than two minutes, an [npc=20854] yells, "Time for the pain!" and the [npc=20763] will appear (forum posts appear to suggest that the quest giver has an approximate 7 minute respawn timer).
• Help the [npc=20763] kill the loudmouth [npc=20452].
• At this point the [npc=20763] will offer you a quest. Accept the quest, Escape from the Staging Grounds.
• Escort the [npc=20763] out of the Ethereum Staging Grounds, and northeast, back to the Protectorate Watch Post at coords 59.4, 32.2.
• Turn in the quest to [npc=20448].

Description
Thank K'aresh! He would have torn me apart! I'm a Protectorate soldier, fleshling. My platoon was sent on a recon mission about 10 days ago. As we were moving across the upper ledges of this island, a group of Ethereum jumped us. At least I think it was Ethereum. They had the same energy color but their wrappings looked void. Only Tyralius was spared. I think they put him in a prison cell. I've got to get back to the Protectorate Watch Post! Can you escort me back?
