TheWoWDBI had to manually click the item in my bag insted of clicking the icon showing up beside the quest log for it to actually get any progress.

I'm not being offered this quest by the NPC. I have done everything in the chain listed by varenne, EXCEPT for the bonus objective quest.
Being 120 the bonus does not activate anymore, so maybe you have to do this part while leveling? Pretty irritating if so, as I didn't really want to level another alliance just for the mechanical prairie dog pet.
Edit: As Smirx says on the page for [npc=137694], doing the quest chain starting with Trouble at Greystone Keep will unlock these quests.
While it's perfectly possible to complete this quest by just standing in one spot, the survey completes much faster if you follow the gold rings that are produced when you use it. The only thing that might slow you down are the [npc=137743] mobs (which you should need at the same time anyway for Reverse Tinkering) and, possibly, the [npc=138341] mobs littered around the area. If you enter their green radius and trigger their attention, just dodge the beam that comes from the turret's center.

Some time ago, a good friend of mine who had a tinker shop in Boralus just stopped all correspondence. With the state of foreign affairs, I wasn't able to look for him myself until recently. It's not just him. It seems that all of the gnomes that were living in the city just up and vanished. I've decided to start my search with these ruins, but the machines here have gone haywire. Could you go get a good magnetic reading on the place?
