There is an excellent short story by Philip K. @#$% (who wrote the stories that inspired Minority Report, Blade Runner, Total Recall an Next, amongst others) called "The Eyes Have It". Most likely not a reference to it, but this quest made me think of it nevertheless.
If for some reason you lost the Eye before completion, you'll have to abandon the quest and get it again from the altar.
