It also allows you to easily fish in schools other classes can't or can hardly reach, like some that spawn in the lake north of Garadar in Nagrand.

As of WotLK (Actually the 3.0.2 content patch) scribes are able to make a glyph that eliminates the reagent cost of this spell.
As of 4.3 Levitate causes you to glide instead of jogging in thin air. If you cast levitate on a Druid in Cat form they look like they are riding an invisible bicycle
Tooltip
Levitates a party or raid member for 10 min, floating a few feet above the ground, granting slow fall, and allowing travel over water.

Seeing as we can now cast it on group members, I think Blizzard should create "Prayer of Levitate".
Prayer of Levitate Reagent: A Whole Bird Seriously though, this would be a nice idea...for those ppl who can't make the Thaddius jump :P
Levitate is the fastest way from aldor rise to the flight master in shattrath if you don't have an epic flying mount.
Get a small start with your epic ground mount and float to takeoff in 10 seconds.
As of patch 3.0.8, Levitate can now be cast on other players.
That is the FIRST thing I tried, lol.
It's worth noting that this new change to levitate only works on members in your party/raid, so you can't go around a city levitating everyone you see.
This spell
isused to be castable on Traveler's Tundra Mammoth and Mekgineer's Chopper, allowing them to run across water (seems to be no longer true).
Now that this is castable on others, I tested the minimum target level - you cannot cast Levitate on anyone lower than 24. Also worth noting is that it vanishes as soon as the priest who cast it leaves the party, which means if some jerk levitates his whole party off a ledge and leaves the party, there will be blood.
useful in naxx - you dont have to walk through that poisonous water.

I'm curious... does this work with lava?
Neither levitate nor the shaman skill Water Walking work on lava, Undercity's goo or other goo-like substances.EDIT:
By 0xfeeddeadbeef (1·4·11) 6 days ago (Patch 4.0.6)
Also: while using levitate you can walk in the water - yes, IN the water. Extremely useful in Vashj'ir.
Say this just now and though I'd clarify it a bit:
In Vashj'ir you get a buff called Sea Legs. It increases your swim speed and underwater running speed (basically you can swim fast, but run on the bottom even faster). With Levitation you can run without being at the bottom. Increased speed!
Uh...Tears of the Goddess, anyone?
Does this spell allow you to float over the Toxic Spores in the Vashj fight without taking the damage?
I didn't realize that the Levitate buff for others would be so fun and useful. But a warning. When in Naxx certain people will expect it and in some cases demand it. Kinda reminds me of those that are too lazy to run back.
if you cast this on a warlock in demon form, he will flap his wings and float higher than normal, this effect also happends on the doomguards summoned by warlocks
Do not go afk on a boat after casting this! When disembarking, the boat will likely leave you behind!

Hey! I'm very humble, thank you very much. More humble than the guy next to me, anyway.
So if you are a base jumper like most priests, you probably found out on Tuesday about the change to Levitate. I recommend an auto self cast macro if you don't want to splat because you don't have a target selected ;-) #showtooltip Levitate /cast [raid] Levitate; [target=player] Levitate /target player /target lasttarget It may seem a little repetative, but the extra /target is to resolve the levitate on yourself in case it fails on your target (e.g. out of range or mounted). Happy base jumping!
Unless there was a mage who Slow Falled everyone :)
Very fun spell I wish the pose after you cast this spell stayed when you walk or cast. The pose is the Spirit of Redemption.
Use Levitate to keep chase after Druids who flee to water and use Aquatic Form. Provided they don't damage you, you can keep up with them. Try to keep Shadow Word: Pain active so they don't get a chance to leave combat and stealth in Cat Form.
Levitate will also let you keep up with Shamans using Water Walking.
No, unfortunately not. I tried to walk on the lava that surrounds The Altar of Storms in Burning Steppes, and was instantly hurt by the lava. The levitation ability disappeared immediately, and my priest fell into the lava.
The 3.0.8 patch notes are currently listing a change to this spell. That is, it'll be castable on others.
Now if only this had been done while Shatt was still popular. Plenty of fun could've been had off Aldor Rise by non priests and mages.
Any idea if it will be possible to use this mounted with changes in the patch, otherwise will it demount people that you cast it on?
Casting Levitate on growing crops in Sunsong Ranch causes them to rise from the ground.
Has no benefit to them actually growing, but looks silly.
When doing The Humanoid Cannonball, I really thought that talking to [npc=57850] would remove the effect. If not teleporting then surely entering the canon would.
...that was one target I missed by a long shot.
Useful on the eagle boss in ZA when you get knocked into the air.
I freaked out when I saw that. Then I just started gliding around all over the place. Very enjoyable addition!
Yes, hovering instead of walking and running while levitating would be more awesome.
Does this ability work over hazardous liquids? (i.e. Lava)
Does not work. An error message appears saying " The target unit is mounted"
- As of Patch 3.3.3 (23 March 2010), the Levitate bug has been fixed
- However, you can still "Wall Glide" (Move horizontally along a wall)
- You could auto-run into a wall and get "stuck" (like into a small cavity), and then get Levitated by a Priest
- Afterwards you would "Wall Climb" straight upwards. This was usable everywhere, like, Mount Hyjal, Battlegrounds, Instances, etc ..
The existence of this bug got known to players around Patch 3.3.0 (December 2009 to March 2010)
Most players tried to keep it a public secret, in order to avoid Blizzard knowing
It's speculated this bug has been there since the start of WoW, but with the introduction of Glyph of Levitate, it was more likely to be discovered
You can use a flying mount while levitating, but regular ground mounts will sink of course.
I'm not sure about lava, but it does avoid the green slime in Naxx most of the time (sometimes you randomly dip down just far enough to take dmg) but 95% of the time, you float over it and take no damage
After going splat several times, I replaced my levitate spell with a macro as well. Mine's shorter, but works beautifully: /cast [target=player]levitate This will not change your target but will cast levitate on yourself :) On an unrelated note, I do wish they would change it so priests cannot cast it on other priests, or you can block incoming levitate casts, something like that. The other priest in my raid insists on casting it on me, even after I have asked several times for him not to. The worst is when I'm trying to get a food buff and suddenly I'm levitating.. GRRRRRR
While you can eat while levitating, I believe having it cast on you interupts the current food being consumed thus wasting a buff food if it's done too early.
This is very useful when you want to get The Fishing Diplomat achievement as a Horde character. You can just walk on the water, north from Westfall, into the harbor of Stormwind. Then you can just fish while standing on the water.
As of 5.0.4, Levitate no longer requires a Light Feather to use.
Even if you're NOT using the Glyph of Levitate.
It would be nice if they would turn the sparkles for this spell into a Glyph instead of having them be baseline. Like tinsel I find it very distracting.
I found it was even cooler when a priest cast this on my Demonology warlock after I had changed to Meta form. Instead of hovering there, I was flapping my wings, looking like I was flying just above the ground. It'd be so awesome if it stayed like that while moving!
This is one of the best spells ever, especially with http://www.wowhead.com/?item=43370 so you can use it as much as you want without having to worry about your stock of feathers. It's fun to go into the middle of a lake, levitate, and start fishing, then use your flying mount on the water and fly away.
If you're trying to make a getaway with this, can an enemy dispel it off of you and give you a bad day?
As of 3.2 druids in shapeshift "float" more realistically when levitated.
At the moment if the levitate buff is on you while underwater, instead of swimming you will still walk (though at the reduced swim speed).
This spell along with a few other similar spells (Slow Fall, Path of Frost, etc..), appear to mess with threat when cast on a tank. After experimentation it seems that if you cast Levitate on your tank before he gets hit by mobs, then the mobs will ignore the tank and go for whoever is next in their aggro table (or just keep bashing the tank if he is alone in the aggro table, of course), until the tank clicks off the buff, gets hit (by aoe or whatever), or taunts the mobs (causing him to get hit).
This experiment can be performed anywhere but for the best results, I recommend going in the revamped Zul Aman, just before the lynx gauntlet (so after you kill/skip the crocolisk tamer pat). Levitate the tank, have him walk forward along with another party member into the lynx pack so that both of those party members are in the mobs aggro table, and watch the mobs shred the non-tank member.
I've wiped countless times because of this in ZA, so now I instruct my tank to click off levitate as soon as he's crossed the water.
Damage cancel this even if you are using Power Word: Shield

until they spit on your then you just put yourself at a disadvantage by swimming in the water against a druid.
Then you simply press SPACEBAR + Levitate! VOILA! Each time you're stopped(slowed) by them dropping you in the water, they will also be stopping to cast at you.Once a drood spits on you .. your not levitating until that DoT is gone.
I have a better macro for this spell...
#showtooltip
/cast [target=mouseover, exists] [target, exists] [target=player] LevitateCasts lev on whoever you are moused over (if friendly and exists), and then the target (if friendly and exists) and then you if the other two conditions are not met.
I pretty much use that general macro logic on all my macros, healing ones included.
This spell is perfect to kill your own friends if you have a passanger mount or a dumb person following you for gold. I managed to kill 5 people who followed me off dalaran. all i could do was laugh as they fell.
I believe this is one of the most fun and underrated abilities found in the game.
Everyone has done a good job of listing the different uses, here are two others:
1) Cast levitate on your party/raid member's pet. It's funny seeing their reaction. :)
2) Cast levitate on somebody just before they do a /sleep emote. Looks like a magic levitation trick. :)(Oh and DEFINITELY cast this at least once on a Warlock buffed with Metamorphosis. The animation is awesome and makes the Warlock look like Illidan in phase 2.) :D
