If you're ranged the birds high in the air make it pretty easy to do this quest.
Surprised nobody has said this yet...
This quest is likely a reference to Lord of the Rings (III), due to the army of gondor being dead before fighting.
It also is coupled with the quest "A Line Unbroken", where the spirits are released from their Oaths, and can only be released from their oaths from the King of Gondor, whose line was forgotten but unbroken.

What to do
Description
Hmm... If Shado-Master Chong trusted you, perhaps you can help us. The yaungol are our enemies. Still, we must prove we are better than they. We will show them honor in death. As after most battles, the carrion birds have begun gathering. Thin their numbers, so the bodies of our foes will not be desecrated. They've gathered at the battlefield to the west.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Where this quest fits
Before this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- A Line Unbroken
When we regrouped after their initial attack, we numbered three less. You can fight, and we must plan our defense should these cursed yaungol attack again. If you would help us, grant our fallen comrades their last rites, and recover their armor.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- To the Wall!
They are attacking again! <Lin looks to the Ox Gate.> Archers... on the wall! I need you to get up there. My wife Suna went to scout the wall with that fool Lao-Chen. Perhaps if he had spent more time preparing defenses and less building that ridiculous ale lift contraption... It matters not.
