It took me a while to figure this one out. Your movement keys (right, left) swing your character around on the gunner chair. So the "in front of you" means when your gunner chair faces the ship, not looking towards the prow of your own boat. It still took a while since a lot of fires didn't seem to react, but I finally got it done.

Description
