Some advice when completing this quest - you want to toggle on walk (rather than run) so that you can slowly walk over the runes. If you run too fast, you miss spots, and it can be pretty finicky as the quest credit requires that you cover EVERY little spot on the runes.
I toggled on walk and slowly completed each rune one by one, and had much less hassle with this.
The default key for toggle run/walk is Num Lock /. You change this key by going to Game Menu --> Key Bindings --> Movement Keys and changing the key for "Toggle Run/Walk"

Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe we've found the most irritating quest of this expansion.
When you accept the quest, a pattern will appear on the floor. It is the pattern of the first rune you need to trace.
When you run over the pattern, it will fill in with a visual effect wherever you touch it. The effect corresponds to whatever the rune is, i.e. arcane, fire or frost.
The idea is to run over the entire pattern, so all the lines are filled in with the spell effect. When the pattern is filled in correctly, it will disappear with a flash and it will be replaced by the next rune that needs to be traced. When you have traced the final rune, the quest will complete.
When the pattern seems all filled-in but you do not get credit for it, it is likely that there is a small spot not filled in somewhere that is difficult too see. In this case you may have to trace the pattern again. It can help slowing down to walking pace, instead of running, when tracing the pattern.
Edit: Just did this quest again in patch 8.3 and it looks like it has been heavily nerfed, i.e. the pattern is marked as complete before you have filled it in in its entirety, making the quest much easier.

What to do
Description
Still aching to get into the headmistress' study, eh? I suppose I can let you in... as long as you prove that you've been studying. Proper rune formation is essential when it comes to spellcasting. If you can draw a rune, you can cast a spell. I will provide outlines for you. You can simply use your feet to trace the runes.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

What's this? A new, confused student, desperately trying to win the favor of the headmistress, wandering the halls without anything to do? Perfect! I need help with my research. I'm writing a paper on combat. Grab me some books from the shelf over there.
