The "Forlorn Hope" was the name given to the first wave of soldiers to make an assault on a very dangerous, usually well fortified enemy position. It was expected that the majority of participants would not survive. It would typically consist of men who had volunteered for different reasons; to achieve a pardon for a conviction which had put them in the army in the first place, for a junior officer from a non-aristocratic background to achieve a promotion he could otherwise not afford, or just because they'd had enough of life and war and didn't care.
Much reference is made to "The Hope" in works about the Peninsula Wars. In non-fiction the autobiography of Sergeant William Lawrence mentions The Hope and in fiction, Bernard Cornwell's "Sharpe" series describes in terrifying detail how attacking as part of The Hope may have seemed from the soldiers perspective; especially his description of the horrific Seige of Badajoz in the book "Sharpe's Company".

Description
<Lady Katherine's jaw sets.> I refuse to believe I am too late. No one has ever come back from Fate's End, but if anyone could survive I have to believe it would be my Jaina. Go to Stormsong Valley and secure transit to Fate's End from the tidesages. Brother Pike is a good place to start. Hurry, {name}.

Where this quest fits
Before this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- The Mysterious Island
Fate's End is just that. It's where the very worst criminals are sent. No one ever comes back. I'm sorry Lady Katherine will have to hear this, but I'm glad it isn't my job to tell her. <Flynn hands you the document solemnly.> I'm certain she'll want an update, even if the news is as bad as this.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Ritual Effects
I will need some assistance in conducting the ritual to allow us to gain passage to Fate's End. To help me with that, you will require the proper items and attire.
