When you start the quest, a Plagueborn Slime will spawn to accompany you.
You then need to interact with Plague Refuse in the quest area. The Plagueborn Slime will move into the Plague Refuse and retrieve the quest item Laboratory Equipment. Click on Laboratory Equipment in your Slime to retrieve it. Rinse and repeat.

Unless I am missing something, clicking on each "Plague Refuse" should be giving you a piece of, or at least a chance of finding, "Laboratory Equipment". So far I have interacted with about 20 and don't even get a loot action. It appears like the system is processing something, then results in nothing. I hope this isn't a main campaign quest, but pretty sure it is.
- Almost immediately after writing this I went back to the quest NPC due to realizing the that quest text makes it sound like you should have an slime/ooze with you to do the work. Why this wasn't given to me/why it didn't appear when I got the quest, I am not sure. After going back there and clicking on the quest (even though it was already in my log and not ready to turn in) a slime appeared next to me. Things appear to be working as intended now.

What to do
Description
Ah, slimes: the dearest of friends and infinitely useful! They will help us craft our potion. But it seems our tools have been scattered around, doused in toxic refuse. Margrave Stradama would be so disappointed at my lack of respect for lab safety! Your slime can comb through the refuse, diluting the plague's harmful agents. Simply pull the cleaned equipment from the body of your slime! Slimes... what would we do without them?

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
