Actually, since Schnottz has a whole bunch of Hitler/Nazi references it's more likely a reference to a failed bomb plot by Oberst Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg and several top ranked army officials who believed they could do a better job of running the war effort than Hitler. The group included The Desert Fox himself. As seen in the Tom Cruise movie Valkyrie.
