All you have to do is get inside the cave and loot the chest. Playing possum is just to keep the elite from aggroing on you. If you're OP, you can just walk in there, kill him, and loot the chest.

[npc=34499] guards the entrance patrolling to approximately (62, 62), and [npc=34500]s inhabit the area.
/way Ashenvale 62.6 60.3 Oso's Chest
For those who like a little rough-and-tumble when questing, note that Oso hits like a freaking truck and takes a lot of damage. I downed him as a ret pally yesterday: level 25 geared in quest reward gear from Redridge and Ashenvale (with the exception of the 2-hander I got from Shadowfang, and the goggles I made from crafting).
It was a long fight and I spent at least half of it spamming my self-heals just to stay in the game. Most satisfying melee in months, I dare say. Very enjoyable.
Edit: By long, of course, I mean "longer than three seconds," which can feel like an eternity in this age of nerfed content. Figure the fight went on for 20 seconds, which is a by-gosh relative epoch in quest-melee years.

What to do
Description
The last piece of the rod is held by druids of the claw. I asked their leader, Oso Bramblescar, to give it to me, but he and his guardians nearly killed me! Clearly they too were affected by the Horde's corruption of the Forest Heart. But, I have an idea for how you can get into Oso's cave and grab the pommel. Ever since I was a faun, I've been pretty good at playing possum. It works great against bears! I can teach you! Go east to the Shady Nook, and if they try to get you, just use my technique.

- Search the Bole
I wish your tidings were better. Raene is correct, I know about Dartol's creation and the treants in the area--at least I did once. They've become corrupted now, their nature twisted. To find the next piece of the rod, you'll have to find the key to open the chest it's in.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Retaking Mystral Lake
We could easily have held Silverwind Refuge from the Horde had they not taken control of our water elemental defenders on Mystral Lake. One of their shaman summoned in Tideress, an old and angry water spirit of the forest who befouled our elementals and turned them against us.
