This is part of a quest chain in which the player aids Kalecgos (the new blue dragon aspect) in finding Azuregos and protecting him from the black dragonflight. It spans much of the land of Azshara and is composed of many quests, several of which are completely original in their concepts.

Quest
Shear Will
A World of Warcraft quest in Azshara. Facts and objectives from the current retail game data.

Each hippogryph drops 1 feather as of 7/3/10, so you have to kill 80 hippogryphs to complete this quest. As it turns out, you get more XP from the kills on this quest than you do for completing this quest.
EDIT: As stated in the reply, the above status is no longer correct.
- Now, every hippogryph drops 5-12 feathers.
Blizzard seems to understand that killing 80 hippogryphs doesn't really make sense.

What to do
Description
I'd be amazing! At archmagery. Amazing! He won't even talk to me because I don't have a stupid robe and hat. Pffft. The most amazing archmage this land has ever seen can't just have any robe and hat. I need to show him that I'm something special, and I know just how to do it. Go out there and kill some of those hippogryph things. Bring me back a TON of feathers. You heard me! A whole bunch of feathers! Go go, I'll have the robe ready for them by the time you get back.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Where this quest fits
Before this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Renewable Resource
We're going to need some more animate basalt. There's only one reliable source for that in the area, a mountain giant named Balboa. We can't be killing the mountain giant if we want to keep stocked in the stuff long term, so we've just been chipping off pieces at a time.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Manual Labor
The local demons seem to get quite a kick out of stealing all of our arcane manuals. I highly doubt most of them can even read, so they're probably doing it just to spite us.
The storyline at a glance
Azshara has 88 steps, from Runaway Shredder! to The Conquest of Azshara.
