When you are in the right spot to attune the compass, the extra action button will appear that you have to push in order to attune it.
Once you push the button a short roleplaying sequence will play. If the place is crawling with Restless Spirits, you will still get credit when you push the button but you will most likely miss the sequence due to fighting the Spirits. If you want to see the sequence, you should clear the area before pushing the button.
The correct spot for attuning the compass will be indicated on the map but you have to be fairly close to the centre of said spot in order for the button to appear.
- At Deadman's Crossing it is close to the tree with the hanging bodies.
- The spot for the church is just inside it.
- The third spot is on top of the bridge close to the centre.

Hi, dismiss any demons you have summoned (doomguard, voidwalker etc) and Attune the Compass popped up once I was in the zones: get right into the middle of zone, might have to kill a few spooks first. :) tool tip disappears once you leave it zone then pops again when you're in the next one.

Description
The journal mentions a "stronger pull" for the compass. If the spirits of this place are indeed tied to it, they may serve as the pull we need. I've come upon several locations in the pass where restless spirits tend to appear. Perhaps if you show the spirits there the compass, they may be able to help point it in the right direction. You seek these locations out. I'll continue on to Karazhan and see if I can find anything leading to the Dark Riders.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Where this quest fits
Before this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- To Point the Way
Though the journal devolves into dark ramblings written in hurried scribbles, one entry stands out: "Ulthalesh. The name rings in my head. I can hear it calling, but where? "The spirits... the very land here is tied to it. It is no wonder we would so often get lost in this place.
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- The Dark Riders
There's a sewer grate along the edge of the river leading to catacombs underneath Karazhan. I've never paid it much attention, but it could be where the spirits are directing us. To think, the Dark Riders may have been under our noses this entire time! Come, let us see where this leads.
The storyline at a glance
Ulthalesh, the Deadwind Harvester has 9 steps, from Ulthalesh, the Deadwind Harvester to The Power Possessed.
