I've compiled a little guide to help those coming to this scenario with no foreknowledge. It's designed to be complementary to varenne's excellent post, and I won't rehash too much of what is in that post - in some cases I have fleshed out a little of the content and made things more clear.
I've also organized the information in a way that is hopefully intuitive.I've written this post mostly because there is information in here that I wish I knew before I did my first few Withered Training sessions!
[toggler id=11 hidden]Author's Note (aka Why isn't this a guide?)[/toggler]
[div id=11 hidden]
My intention is to make this information into a guide at some point. However, at present real life commitments don't allow me the time to do so. With regards to guides, there are a couple of points I take into consideration:
- I consider a guide to be a comprehensive source of ALL (or nearly all) information on a topic. It should be comprehensive, topical, and detailed. If you look at my Artifact Weapon and Legendary guides, I'm sure this will be reflected there. As such, I would rather NOT write a guide than make one that is only piecemeal and mediocre.
- To make this into a full-blown guide, there is still a lot of information I would have to gather, and resources I would have to flesh out. This includes some videos of the runs, which I have not done in the past. This is a project I would like to tackle in the future.
As it stands, hopefully this "mini-guide" is useful to you!
[/div][h2]What is Withered Army Training?[/h2]
Withered Army Training is a special World Quest Scenario in Suramar, associated with [faction=1859] faction. The first time you do the scenario will be via a quest that is part of the overarching Suramar story questline - Building an Army. After you complete this one-time quest, you will get access to the World Quest, Withered Army Training, roughly every 3 days in Suramar.
This is the Legion equivalent of the [zone=6716] scenario from Mists of Pandaria for those who remember that.
[h2]Why do I want to do this scenario?[/h2]
The biggest reason to do this scenario is for reputation with [faction=1859]. You can get a maximum of 425 reputation + 50 for the World Quest (not factoring in any reputation buffs you might have).
- You need 8000/12000 Honored reputation to unlock the attunement for the Mythic-only dungeons [zone=7855] and [zone=8079].
- Two of the Class Order Hall set pieces are unlock via Nightfallen reputation (Gloves at Honored, Shoulders at Exalted)
- [item=140218] is a shoulder enchant available at Honored with [faction=1859], and gives the chance to obtain enchanting materials, potions and flasks from mobs killed.
- This faction otherwise offers 2 Toys, 1 Pet, and various Rank 3 crafting recipes for Jewelcrafters, Tailors and Enchanters.
Other rewards include:
- Item level 810+ Gear
- Artifact Power (minimum 100, but can exceed 800 without factoring in Artifact Knowledge)
- [item=124124]
- 8 Toys, exclusive to this scenario
- A pet, exclusive to this scenario - [item=136914]
- A permanent bank access point in Shal'aran (via [item=140778])
- [currency=1155] (a lot more is used up for the World Quest than is gained, but the scenario still replenishes a bit of your spent currency)
- [currency=1220]
- Order Hall follower upgrades
- A rare chance at [item=140495], the quest item to obtain [item=137573]
Finally, certain classes will get their Hidden Artifact Appearance from this scenario. Note that these are not 100% drops, and are typically available in the guaranteed chest at the end of the scenario:
- [item=139546] - Blood [class=6]
- [item=139563] - Windwalker [class=10]
- [item=139565] - Protection [class=2]
[h2]How much does the scenario cost?[/h2]
The very first time you do the scenario (via the Building an Army quest) there is no cost. The World Quest requires a minimum of 400 [currency=1155], with a maximum of 2000 [currency=1155]. As outlined by varenne, the more mana you invest, the more [npc=110141]s you get in your army, which is important (as explained below).
When you first start out in Suramar, you have with a mana pool "cap" of only 300, and upgrade it via various looted items and by completing quests in the Suramar storyline (which is quite extensive - see here).
[toggler id=1 hidden][/toggler][h2]How does the scenario work?[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=1 hidden]
This scenario puts you in an instanced version of Falanaar. There is no time limit to the scenario, and you can take as long as you want. There are two elements to this scenario:
- The score - this score corresponds to how much you kill during the scenario, and will translate into what kind of loot you get in the big guaranteed chest at the end.
- Your current score will be visible at the top middle portion of your screen.
- The extra chests - scattered throughout the scenario are chests of varying sizes. You can obtain a number of these in addition to the guaranteed chest you receive at the end.
The [npc=110141]s in your army act as both a boost to your damage dealt (as they will attack your target) and a "currency" with which you can obtain certain chests.
The 3 types of chests are:
- Small Treasure Chests - these are the most numerous chests, and do not have any requirements in order to open them - simply loot as many of these as you see for things like [currency=1155], Gold, and sometimes [item=124124]
- Treasure Chests - these are the "medium-sized" chests, and require 5 Withered to "carry". Note that "opening" these by interacting with them and selecting the menu option will immediately remove 5 Withered from your army, and will transport this chest to the rest area for you to loot at the end of the scenario.
- Glimmering Treasure Chests - these are the "large-sized" chests, and require 10 Withered to "carry". Like the medium chests, will immediately remove Withered from your army (in this case 10), and will transport this chest to the rest area.
The implication of the medium and large chests above is that opening these chests will leave you with less Withered for the remainder of the scenario. This is why it is often recommended you clear as many mobs as you can (for a higher score) then go back and open chests.
The other important point about the medium and large chests is that they are one-time only chests. What this means is that any "Treasure Chest" (requiring 5 Withered) or "Glimmering Treasure Chest" (requiring 10 Withered), WILL NOT appear in any subsequent runs once you have looted them! This means that once you have looted the medium/large chests from all of the known locations, future runs will give you only Small Treasure Chests.
That being said, you will have all of the upgrades for your army once you have exhausted these chests. Note that you can only get 1 of each upgrade - you won't be able to loot duplicates (which makes sense, as a specific chest will disappear once you have looted it in a run).
An additional point is that each Glimmering Chest (the large, 10 Withered variety) and Treasure Chest (the medium, 5 Withered variety) has specific, fixed loot. Each location will give the same loot for anyone - this means you can target specific chests to get the upgrades you would like first. See my Room-by-Room Guide and list of large/medium chests below for details.
[/div][toggler id=2 hidden][/toggler][h2]How do I change the size of my army?[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=2 hidden]
As aforementioned, the size of your starting army (for the World Quest version) is determined by the amount of [currency=1155] you invest at the beginning (a minimum of 8 [npc=110141]s for 400 [currency=1155], to a maximum of 20 [npc=110141]s for 2000 [currency=1155]). For all intents and purposes, there is no reason you shouldn't be investing the maximum amount of [currency=1155] your mana cap will allow. The more Withered you start with, the more damage you do, which is a big part of succeeding in this scenario. Additionally, the more Withered you have, the more chests you can haul out of the scenario!
You will have a buff that tells you how many Withered you currently have, as well as their average health.Gaining Withered
Throughout the scenario, you can add further Withered to your army as you find them - there will be some of theses friendly NPCs that you can recruit simply by clicking them.
Some of these are in the web-wrapped cocoons, so it's worthwhile opening these any time you encounter them. Note that any cocoon-wrapped Withered you reveal will despawn after a short time if you do not recruit them!Losing Withered
There are a few ways you lose Withered from your army:
- Getting killed
There are mobs in the scenario that will do AoE damage to your Withered via certains spells, unless stunned or interrupted. In addition, individual mobs can kill off your Withered individually. It's important to note that while you may tag every enemy, these mobs have a propensity to turn and beat on your army, almost as if they had been taunted. This makes stuns and other CC quite useful, as well as knockbacks. It also makes it important for you to kill your enemies quickly! Because there is no time limit, it's possible to make small pulls consistently so that your Withered are taking as little damage as possible.
- Any damage that a [npc=110141] takes is permanent. Attempts to heal it up will appear to work initially, but after a few seconds the healed HP decays and returns to the previous value.
- Being frightened away
Any time a Withered takes damage, there is a chance it will run away in fear. When this happens, you get the warning "One of the withered is running away. Catch him before he is lost in the tunnels!" You have only a few seconds to chase down and click this Withered, or you will lose it from your pool.- Being outrun
It is possible for you to outrun your Withered army; if you go too fast and don't let your army catch up, you run the risk of losing your entire army (or a big chunk of it) in one go!
[/div][toggler id=3 hidden][/toggler][h2]What can my army do?[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=3 hidden]
Your army has two modes - [spell=216942] and [spell=216943]. By default they are on [spell=216942], but can be switched to [spell=216943] when you activate the Extra Action Button.
- [spell=216943] is a great way to nuke down larger mobs or bosses.
- [spell=216943] makes your army run around willy-nilly in a small area and aggro anything they encounter. As such, it is highly advisable you clear all the lesser trash in a room before activating this to nuke a bigger target.
- You can switch between the modes freely by pressing your Extra Action Button.
- Make sure to switch back to [spell=216942] before moving into a new area, so you don't leave your army behind!
[/div][toggler id=4 hidden][/toggler][h2]When does the scenario end?[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=4 hidden]
The scenario ends when you:
- Lose all of your Withered army
- Take a killing blow (which doesn't actually kill you, but ends the scenario as you are rescued by First Arcanist Thalyssra)
- Reach the very end of the scenario, and speak to Chief Telemancer Oculeth, selecting "Send me home"
At this point you are transported to the rest area. Here, you can open the guaranteed chest, the contents of which vary based on your score, as well as any other chests you may have grabbed by "spending" Withered to carry them out for you (the medium and large sized chests).
An important note is that leaving the scenario prematurely for any reason, logging out, hearthing etc. will eject you from the scenario and will NOT allow you back in until the World Quest respawns in 3 days!
[/div][toggler id=5 hidden][/toggler][h2]How should I approach my first few runs?[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=5 hidden]
This part is practical advice for first-timers.Your very first run will be via the quest Building an Army. You will have a fixed army size of 8 Withered to begin with. Your goal for this run should be to get 1 or 2 medium chests (the ones simply designated "Treasure Chest"). These require 5 Withered each to carry out, so to get a second one you will need to recruit a couple more Withered if you can.
- Your very first run is free - you only have to start paying [currency=1155] when you do the World Quest. As such, it's not optimal to be capped on [currency=1155] when doing this the first time, as you will have chances to pick up mana during the scenario and should have space for it.
- Do this scenario in tank or DPS spec; tank is better if available, and your self healing isn't great as a DPS.
- Your aim should always be to manage small pulls. Perhaps you are a class that can solo a lot of content, and pulling large groups and AoE damage is a strength of yours; I would still recommend you refrain from this and play it safe, as the goal is to not only survive but to ensure that your army stays alive and healthy!
- Most of trash you encounter are standard Withered hostiles and spiders that are prevalent in Suramar. The one mob to be careful with is the [npc=110771] - large pink elementals. These have two potentially dangerous spells:
- [spell=220297] (2.5-second cast) - throws an orb that does AoE damage. This cast is interruptible, and should ALWAYS be interrupted somehow.
- [spell=220318] (4-second cast) - this is an AoE explosion that the wraith will cast when close to death. To avoid this you must either stun it at low health or nuke it before it completes the cast.
- Make copious use of [spell=216943] when dealing with these mobs.
- If you feel like you've emptied the area and can't find any more mobs, you may have missed a side entrance. Go through the first room to the T-intersection; turn left and go down the stairs, then when you reach the door, turn left again - this area will open a lot more chests and mobs for you.
After finishing the above quest, you should get the World Quest shortly after for a second chance at the scenario. This time, you will have to spend some [currency=1155].
- If you are ambitious and have the time, try to enlarge and fill up your mana pool as much as possible before tackling this. The more Withered, the better your attempt will go. This means tracking down all of the upgrade items (see varenne's post for details) and/or completing as much of the Suramar questline as you can before starting the scenario.
- The World Quest sticks around for 2 days before expiring, giving you some time to do so.
- While some people may be able to pull off full clears on their first run, I would highly recommend that your goal for the first few runs is to net as many medium sized chests as you can (the 5 Withered variety, "Treasure Chests"). What you are looking to net are permanent upgrades to your Withered army that will make ALL future runs go more smoothly! These include (but are not limited to):
- [item=139018]
- [item=139017]
- [item=140448]
- [item=139010]
- Until you have some of the above upgrades, I would not advise going too far into the ruins. I had the misfortune of unexpectedly running into [npc=110954]; he has 25+ million health and wreaks havoc with your army. He also hits pretty hard (at least of a non-plate wearer). The first time I encountered him, I died without looting any chests, and that feels like a real waste.
- Under "General Information and Tips" below, I've made up a priority list of upgrades to get, so you can aim to get the best upgrades earlier.
- [npc=110954] will randomly appear once you reach a certain point in the scenario (past at least 3-4 chests in the ruins) - there is no way to see him before he appears, or predict when this will happen!
- You can see the maps I've made below to see where [npc=110954] will spawn - there are enough chests before this that you don't have to venture into that territory for your first runs.
- Obviously, your mileage may vary based on class, spec and experience. In general, I found it worthwhile to play it safe and get some of the upgrade items, then aim for more extensive clears later on.
- For more ambitious clears, check out the videos varenne has worked hard on. One of these is of an 800+ score run, which goes for nearly 75 minutes! Keep in mind that his army had most if not all of the permanent army upgrades already.
- To follow this strategy, simply clear mobs as you go, and keep track of Treasure Chests you encounter. Once you have cleared enough of the area to reach the chests that you can afford with your Withered pool, open them up.
- If you have a few Withered left (not enough to open another chest) you can go deeper into the ruins and see how much higher of a score you can net. Your DPS will be much lower without a large army, but this ensures that you have at least set aside some chests should you run into trouble.
- Presumably, the rewards from your guaranteed chest (which are based on your score in the scenario) cap out at a score of 425; achieving a higher score than this seems to provide no further benefit.
TL;DR - Don't worry too much about score for the first few runs. You can net a decent score, but focus more on getting some of the early chests. These will make your future runs much better.
Below I have a couple of sections that can help:
- Room-by-room Guide is a detailed explanation of each room and notable mobs and chests.
- Optimal Route will tell you where to go - see this section for the areas you should clear and chests you should gun for on your very first run(s).
[/div]
[toggler id=8 hidden][/toggler][h2]Room-by-Room Guide[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=8 hidden]
Below are two maps I created to outline where everything is in this scenario. Note that not all chests may be represented - this should cover the majority though (there are hidden chests, which require the upgrade [item=139027] to see, which I have not listed here)Temple of Fal'adoraFalanaar Tunnels[screenshot id=568337 height=200 size=small][/screenshot][screenshot id=568336 height=200 size=small][/screenshot][screenshot id=569047 height=200 size=small][/screenshot][screenshot id=569048 height=200 size=small][/screenshot]
The following guide will outline only mobs that have some specific abilities to watch out for - standard trash mobs are not mentioned. There are two levels to this scenario - the Temple of Fal'adora (Upper Level) and the Falanaar Tunnels (Lower Level). The maps above correspond to these levels.
Spell types:
- Interruptible - means any standard spell interrupt will work ([spell=57994], Kick, Pummel, etc.)
- Non-interruptible - means that you need a non-standard ability (stun, knock-back, etc.) to interrupt this.
- Instant - no cast time to interrupt; using a stun can prevent this ability if anticipated.
Pertinent Notes
- All doors requiring Withered or Berserkers to open will NOT consume those Withered when you open them - you just need to have that many in your army to pass those thresholds.
- It is best to open any doors you come across as you see them, even if you don't plan to go into those areas yet. Any doors opened will remain open for the remainder of the scenario.
- This is especially important if you plan to go into room past the "2 Berserker" door. It is highly likely that your Berserkers will die deeper into the scenario, so if you do not open that door initially, you likely won't be able to come back and do so later.
- The following section is a room by room description, to tell you where everything is. Further down I have an step-by-step optimal route to take - jump down to that if you are already familiar with the room locations, etc.
[h3]Temple of Fal'adora (Upper Level)[/h3]
- Room 1
- Mobs of note: [npc=110771]
- [spell=220297] (Interruptible)
- [spell=220318] (Non-interruptible) - casts at low health
- Corridor
- Right door - requires 2 Berserkers, Room 2
- Berserkers are obtained from 2 permanent upgrades from the Large (Glimmering) chests. These are [item=140450] and [item=139011].
- These helms are obtained from chests #6 and #1 respectively.
- Mobs of note: [npc=110771]
These wraiths can be found in packs (up to 3) making AoE stuns/silences extremely important.- Contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (A)
- Left door (bottom of stairs) - requires 10 Withered, Room 3
- Boss: [npc=110844] (37.41 million HP)
- [spell=220445] (Non-interruptible) - puts a glowing circle around the target (hopefully you!); after 4 seconds, explodes doing AoE damage. Simply move away from your Withered if you get this debuff.
- [spell=220583] (Interruptible) - Single target damage
- Contains 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#1) with [item=139011] inside.
- Ramp into ruins of Falanaar
- Found at the gap in the wall to the left when facing the 10 Withered door.
- Room 4
- Mobs of note: [npc=110771]
Some of these patrol back and forth; tag them and pull them individually into the ramp tunnel, and use [spell=216943].- Be careful in this room - it has two levels, with lots of trash on both levels. It is very easy for your army to accidentally pull mobs from below. Heavy AoE may be required.
- Contains 2 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chests (B - on the upper level, and C - on the lower level in the alcove underneath the stairs).
- Descent into Falanaar Tunnels
- Just before going down the ramp into the tunnels, there is 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#2) with [item=140451] inside.
[h3]Falanaar Tunnels (Lower Level)[/h3]
- Bottom of ramp - Room 5
- Mobs of note: [npc=110771]
Pull these and other packs of mobs back into the descent tunnel to kill them individually- DANGER - After this room (as marked by green circles on the map) [npc=110954] can appear!!!
- Boss: [npc=110954] (25.98 million HP)
- [spell=218309] (Instant) - Charges around, attacking your Withered, and gains 300% attack speed for 5 seconds afterward.
- [spell=214824] (Instant) - Similar to a [spell=36554].
- This boss is stealthed, and will appear when you wander into his aggro range.
- He doesn't appear to move around very much if at all - so you are more likely to wander into him rather than trying to wait for him to patrol.
- He can be revealed with Spectral Sight ([class=12]).
- First Arcanist Thalyssra will remark "Look out!" when he appears.
- There are a number of ways to kill him; if you have stuns available, a pet to tank him, and heavy burst damage (e.g. Bloodlust/Time Warp/Heroism) you can nuke him before he kills you.
- Another method is to kite him with slows and whittle him down, if you have good mobility and slows at your disposal. Be sure not to outrun your Withered though!
- It is most important to kite him immediately after he uses [spell=218309] given his attack speed buff.
- [spell=216943] is absolutely essential to help kill him quickly. It is important that you are in a room you have already cleared of trash before using this - hence, kiting him back a ways is advised.
- He drops [item=141593], which is required for a door later in the scenario, granting access to the second half of the instance.
- This key is removed from your inventory after you exit the scenario - as such, you have to kill [npc=110954] each time you want to use the key.
- Circular Hallway 1
- Contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (D)
You may be able to open this chest without pulling [npc=110954].- Midway through this hallway is a rock pile leading up to some webs. You can cross the web "bridges" to move your way up the stone ruins, but there are only 1 or 2 Small Treasure Chests there.
- If you want to do this, it is best you do so later after you clear the room below - or else you may fall and end up aggroing the whole room.
- With a large Withered army, there is the possibility that some may get "stuck" and despawn when moving among the narrow web paths. Proceed at your own risk!
- 4-Way Intersection
- After exiting Circular Hallway 1, there are 3 ways you can go. Going straight will take you to Circular Hallway 2
- Left/Southeast (Door) - requires 10 Withered, Room 6
- Boss: [npc=110790] (46.77 million HP)
- [spell=220377] (Non-interruptible) - spawns many small adds. If this is successfully cast, simply AoE them down.
- [spell=220418] (Interruptible) - cleave damage. Should be interrupted.
- Contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (E)
- Right/Northwest - Room 7
- Mostly light spider/Faldorei trash
- At the far end of the room is a door requiring 10 Withered to open.
- Inside is 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#3), which contains [item=139028].
- You will also find 3 friendly Withered you can recruit inside this room.
- Going south and up the stairs from this area will lead you to Circular Hallway 2
- Circular Hallway 2
- At the west end of this hallway is 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#4), which contains [item=139027]. This is just outside the door that requires [item=141593] to open.
- At the east end of this hallway is a door requiring 10 Withered to open. This leads to Room 8.
- Room 8
- This room has some mobs with bigger health pools. It's ideal to pull them out one by one and take care of them.
- Mobs of note: [npc=110381] X 4 (9.15 million HP each)
- Cast [spell=213836], which reduces haste.
- There are 3 of these grouped up behind the boss ([npc=112425]). If possible, drag the boss out of the room and eliminate him outside, then come back and deal with these remaining mobs.
- Mobs of note: [npc=105753] X 2 (13.51 million HP each)
- Standard melee attacks.
- Boss: [npc=112425] (25.98 million HP)
- Identical mechanics to [npc=110771], just bigger and badder.
- [spell=220297] (Interruptible)
- [spell=220318] (Non-interruptible) - casts at low health
- Contains 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#5) with [item=139019] inside.
- Dro's Doorway - requires [item=141593], west end of Circular Hallway 2
- Head down the stairs until you come to Room 9 on your right.
- Room 9
- Mostly trivial trash spiders around edges (just lots of it!). Lots of eggs that hatch spiderlings.
- [npc=110381] X 1 in the center.
- Stay outside and pull trash out of the room to handle it in smaller packs.
- Contains 1 (large, 10 Withered) Glimmering Treasure Chest (#6) with [item=140450] inside.
- The door in the opposite direction (leading to Room 10 and [npc=110931]) will open once you kill the [npc=110381].
- Room 10
- Mostly scattered trash mobs
- Boss: [npc=110931] (46.77 million HP)
- [spell=220642] (Non-interruptible) - will pick a Withered and deal heavy damage-over-time to it.
- [spell=217981] (Non-interruptible) - deals 15 yard radius AoE damage and a knockback.
- It is highly advisable you pull this boss in the tunnel you have already cleared, as there is a countless stream of spider adds that enters Room 10 from the south.
- Contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (F).
- Stairs to [npc=112411]
- Mobs of note: [npc=112412] (Endlessly spawning)
- [spell=213758] (Instant) - stacking poison DoT.
- There are two flights of stairs up to the last boss, [npc=112411], with a landing in-between. This portion is a gauntlet, as there are an endless stream of [npc=112412]s coming down the stairs constantly.
- The spiderlings only stop spawning when you reach the top of the second flight of stairs.
- It's best to keep up AoE as you're moving up the stairs; keep moving quickly though, or you will become overwhelmed!
- The land between both flights of stairs contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (G).
- Room 11
- Boss: [npc=112411] (46.77 million HP)
- [spell=172850] (Non-interruptible) - puts a number of webs on the floor. Simply avoid them, as they will slow and deal ticking damage.
- Room 12
- After defeating [npc=112411], there is a little trash left before Room 12, in which you will find Chief Telemancer Oculeth. You can speak to him at any point to end the scenario.
- Contains 1 (medium, 5 Withered) Treasure Chest (H).

[h3]TomTom Macros[/h3]
Below I've listed some TomTom macros. Note that for these to work, you MUST be in the scenario, and on the appropriate level (either Temple of Fal'adora or Falanaar Tunnels, based on the map you see). When in the appropriate level, use the macro to mark on that map the points of interest.
All code below is completely copy-paste-friendly for macros (i.e. less than 255 characters for each portion).Temple of Fal'adoraMedium ChestsLarge ChestsBosses/way 32.5, 52.2 Medium Chest (Under Stairs, Bottom floor)

[div id=9 hidden]Temple of Fal'adoraFalanaar Tunnels[screenshot id=569047 height=200 size=small][/screenshot][screenshot id=569048 height=200 size=small][/screenshot]The above maps show how I have numbered the rooms
Below is a route you can take through the scenario. I've optimized this route to try and recruit as many Withered as you can into your army before tackling any real challenges (bosses).
I've written this assuming you have read the room-by-room breakdown, as I will be referring to rooms cited there; I'll also mention some landmarks as I go so you can try and use the maps to follow along.
- Note that if you have a score of 425 or more, you can stop at any point and open chests that in areas you have already cleared. There is no benefit to a full clear unless there are certain chests you are targetting.
- The room-by-room summary (above) lists the contents of each medium and large chest.
TL;DR: 1 → 4 → 5 → 3 → Circular Hallway 1 → Circular Hallway 2 → 2 → 7 → 6 → 8 → 9 → 10 → 11 → 12
- Clear Room 1.
- Go to the T-intersection. Open the "2-Berserker" door but don't go down that way to Room 2; instead go down the left staircase.
- Open the door to Room 3 (with [npc=110844] in it) if you have 10 Withered, but don't go in. Go down the ramp to the tunnels (Room 4).
- Clear the Room 4 top area of mobs - pull each [npc=110771] into the ramp hallway so you can safely use [spell=216943] on them.
- Clear the Room 4 bottom area if you plan to go after Chest "C" or just for score - it's fully of easy trash mobs.
- Proceed down the ramp to the Falanaar Tunnels and Room 5.
- Clear Room 5, but DO NOT go any further (into Circular Hallway 1) yet.
- Once you have cleared the above, you should have recruited a bunch of Withered into your army. Now head back to Room 3.
- If you already have [item=140448] and [item=139018], OR you have 25+ Withered, proceed to Step 9.
- If this is your VERY FIRST run (i.e. if you were doing Building an Army and only started with 8 Withered), this is where you should stop and grab some chests.
- Go for Chest "B" first. This will contain [item=140448].
- If you have 5-9 Withered left after this, you can:
- Go for Chest "D", in Circular Hallway 1. It has a little bit of trash near it and there is a small chance you will pull [npc=110954] when going for this chest, but it contains [item=139018], which is a HUGELY useful upgrade.
- A safer, but less useful goal is to go for Chest "C" in Room 4. This contains [item=140778], that will set up a personal bank in Shal'aran.
- If you have 10-14 Withered after opening Chest "B", go for Chest "C" then Chest "D".
- Clear the edges of the room, picking up the few Withered there. Try to avoid prematurely aggroing [npc=110844], but it's not the end of the world if you do. Kill her, using [spell=216943] to burn her down. Move away from your army if targeted with [spell=220445].
- Head back to Circular Hallway 1 and start clearing it. Note that at any point from here on, [npc=110954] can appear.
- After you reach the 4-Way Intersection, clear the area of the two [npc=110771]s, one-by-one. Open the door to your left (to Room 6), but don't go in yet.
- Hey up the stairs to Circular Hallway 2. Open the door to your immediate left (Room 8), but leave it for now.
- Clear Circular Hallway 2. Head down the stairs at the end to the west end of Room 7. If you haven't encountered [npc=110954] yet, he will be in Room 7.
- Clear the trash on the west end of the room and open the door blocking Chest #3. Grab the 3 Withered in that little alcove.
- Work your way through Room 7, clearing it and collecting the extra Withered, if there are any.
- Head up the stairs and forward into Room 6, where [npc=110790] is. Clear the trash in the front of the room, and then tackle [npc=110790]. Be sure to use [spell=216943]. Prioritize interrupting [spell=220418], and stun during [spell=220377] if possible. AoE down the adds if [spell=220377] is successfully cast.
- Next move out and back into Circular Hallway 2, and then into Room 8. Tag the lone [npc=110381]/[npc=105753] mobs and pull them into the hallway. Next tag the boss ([npc=112425]), and interrupt it to pull it into the hallway. Use [spell=216943] for each of the previous. After taking these out, move into the room and AoE down the 3 [npc=110381] with [spell=216943].
- At this point you may have 30-40 Withered, and it may be a good time to go back and tackle Room 2
- This room has packs of 2-3 [npc=110771], which makes heavy AoE and AoE silences/stuns/knockbacks a real asset to ensure they don't do any major damage before they die.
- You can go back and clear this room at any point; ideally you want to do so with the largest possible army, as it is probably one of the toughest rooms in the scenario.
- Go back into Circular Hallway 2, and head to the west end. Open Dro's door, and head through and down the stairs, clearing trash as you go.
- You will see Room 9 on your right. Stay outside the room and pull mobs out, killing them in small groups. Many of the mobs in this room will automatically come out to you. After killing a certain amount of the trash in this room, the door to the left (across from Room 9) will open.
- After clearing Room 9, head down the hallway to Room 10. There should be a couple of Withered in this hall that you can add to your army.
- Next pull [npc=110931] into this hallway when he patrols close enough. Burn him down as fast as you can, watching out for [spell=220642] and [spell=217981], stunning him to interrupt both if possible.
- After this boss is dead, move into Room 10 and clear it out. Be aware that spiders will constantly keep moving down the stairs into this room.
- After clearing the room and collecting some extra Withered, you must run the gauntlet on the south stairs out of this room. This involves two flights of stairs with constantly spawning [npc=112412] adds, that will easily overwhelm you if you stay in one spot.
- A strategy that can work is to use [spell=216943] to clear mobs of spiders, then move up the stairs and use [spell=216942] to gather your Withered to you. When the [npc=112412]s build up again, switch to [spell=216943] to clear them, move up the stairs some more, switch to [spell=216942] mode, rinse and repeat.
- The spiders will only stop spawning when you engage [npc=112411] at the top of the second set of stairs.
- [npc=112411] casts [spell=172850]; there is no need to stop this, simply avoid standing in the webs or pulling your Withered through them.
- After defeating this boss, there is some trivial trash left, then you have cleared the scenario! Now you can go back and choose the chests you want to carry out.

- As mentioned above, tank and DPS specs are best for this achievement. Your talents as a healer are completely wasted in this scenario, as you can only heal yourself - your Withered cannot be healed up.
- When choosing talents, choose ones that emphasize AoE damage, and if you are able to get extra stuns/knockbacks/interrupts, those will be VERY useful.
- Make sure to use consumables - food buffs (see here for an overview of Legion foods), potions and flasks (Flask of Ten Thousand Scars, Flask of the Countless Armies, Flask of the Whispered Pact, Flask of the Seventh Demon) can help your runs go much smoother.
- Ancient Healing Potion can be a HUGE boon in this scenario - it's great for getting out of tight situations.
- You should ALWAYS obtain the [spell=224189] buff from [npc=112145] in Shal'aran - granted when you feed her for the daily Feed Valtrois quest, but also available from her by speaking to her at any point, for a meager 10 [currency=1155]. A single proc of this will recoup the mana you spent to get the buff - just make sure to stand in the Leyline Rift!
- The [spell=224772], obtained from [npc=98312], should now work in the scenario, as reported by some users. My experience has been otherwise, and it's possible that sometimes it will trigger and other times it won't. It's best to not have to rely on it.
- If you need extra [currency=1155] to get a higher Withered count and do not have the time/inclination to go farm it, keep in mind that [item=139786] and [item=139890] are tradable, and will be available on the Auction House.
[/div][toggler id=7 hidden][/toggler][h2]General Information and Tips[/h2]
[pad]
[div id=7 hidden]
- There a number of rooms in this scenario, with a number of bosses that can be tackled. I have listed some maps and a breakdown of the bosses you will encounter for your convenience.
- As aforementioned, ALL large and medium chests are in FIXED locations - this means you can target certain items by looting chests selectively. See the "Room-by-room" section for a complete list.
- A rough "priority list" of items to obtain (should you be hoping to make future runs easier) are as follows:
- [item=139010] (Chest B, 5 Withered)
- [item=139017] (Chest D, 5 Withered)
- [item=140448] (Chest F, 5 Withered)
- [item=139011] (Chest #1, 10 Withered) and [item=140450] (Chest #6, 10 Withered), in any order.
- [item=139018] (Chest A, 5 Withered)
- [item=140451] (Chest #2, 10 Withered) and [item=139019] (Chest #5, 10 Withered), in any order.
- [item=139028] (Chest #3, 10 Withered)
- Everything else!
- The two doors you initially encounter close to the beginning require A) 10 Withered and B) 2 Withered Berserkers. Opening these doors does not consume or remove Withered from your army like chests do - they are simply prerequisites to go further.
- As my maps show, there are a number of other doors further in the instance. Other than the one door requiring [item=141593], the remaining doors require at least 10 Withered. If your aim is to go deep into the tunnels, make sure you don't dip below 10!
- The Berserkers required to open one door are available via permanent upgrades that are found in the large (Glimmering) treasure chests - namely:
- [item=140450]
- [item=139011]
The chests these are available from are listed in the room-by-room guide above.- Once you have Berserkers in your army, you will notice that they are some of the first Withered to die. This is because they have the tendency to taunt mobs and tank them.
- Other permanent army upgrades that are looted from the large (10 Withered, "Glimmering") chests include:
- [item=140451]
- [item=139019]
- [item=139028]
- [item=139027]
- [item=139027] appears to not be working properly. After you obtain it, you will not see any further "hidden" chests within the scenario; therefore it is a largely useless upgrade at present. You can therefore skip Chest #4 (see maps in the "Room-by-room" section) and go for other ones.
- Don't forget that time is not a factor - you can wait for DPS cooldowns, on-use trinkets, CC etc. to come off of cooldown, and in some cases it may be worthwhile to wait on Bloodlust/Time Warp/Heroism for a particularly nasty boss.
- Small Treasure Chests can be found throughout the scenario
- These are all over the place - be sure to look in corners, crevices, alcoves, behind boulders/debris, by doors, behind larger chests, etc.
- If you stay in the instance long enough, these WILL respawn, so keep an eye out!
- To improve the rate of reputation gain, don't forget reputation buffs. The reputation from the scenario is granted in the form of tokens ([item=141870] and [item=140260]) which can be saved and used once any reputation buff is up.
Note that some of the following buffs stack:
- [spell=46668], available by riding the carousel during the Darkmoon Faire or the [item=93730] (can be used anywhere while the DMF is active, but does not stack with the carousel buff)
- [spell=24705]/[spell=95987], available during the Hallow's End Holiday Event
- [spell=61849], available during the Pilgrim's Bounty Holiday Event
- [spell=20599], one of the human racial abilities
- There are certain abilities that will boot you from the scenario - avoid using these! This includes Shadowmeld and Feign Death, and possibly Vanish as well.
- If you happen to get disconnected during the scenario for any reason, try and log back in as quickly as you can - there is a chance you may still be in the instance when you get back in, if not too many minutes have passed (this is something I experienced firsthand).
- Unfortunately, if it does take too long, it seems that getting disconnected will boot you from the instance, with no loot and not way to get back in until the next time the World Quest shows up.
- As such, if your connection is temporarily unstable or prone to disconnecting, it's best to wait until you can have a more reliable connection before attempting this scenario.
- If you carried a chest outside with Withered, but did not loot it for any reason (e.g. got disconnected before you could open it), it will be respawned the next time you do the scenario, so you can get it then.
- After you have obtained the chests beyond Room 10, there is NO reason to go into those rooms again and kill [npc=110931] and [npc=112411]. I have found that you lose more Withered than you gain by doing those rooms/bosses.

Quest
Building an Army
A World of Warcraft quest in Suramar. Facts and objectives from the current retail game data.
The highest voted Wowhead comments for this page. They are community notes, not TheWoWDB comments.
This quest is part of the Good Suramaritan
This quest will start Withered Army Training world quests for you in Suramar
Building an Army ~ 40 quest in main Suramar storyline. Objectives:
- kill as many mobs as you can. (this will give you score and more reputation with [faction=1859] at the end)
- keep as many withered alive as you can. This will give you loot from chests.
I'll update this post later and add tactics and tips. Don't have time right now;p
You need to be carefull. It is NOT a speed run. Your withered army shouldn't take damage.
- Interrupt every spell you can.
- Tount from Berserker.
- Don't let Withered run in fear.
- Collect all chests at the very end of the scenario.
Keep as many Withered as you can with you. The more you have the more dps you have. Here is demo video of run with 804 score and 45 Withered survived. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6EOn72XMPw
Btw you don't get extra reputation tokens after some point. I got same 4 [item=141870] for run with 500 score and for run with 804 (i bugged this one i think;p Real max score is around 625)
You will get no extra credits for unused Withered, so use them all on chests.Ancient Mana farmspots
You need [currency=1155] to start this world quest.
You will get [item=141652] from Shal'Aran, early in suramar storyline and will be able to collect mana from items on the ground. The best farmspot for me is Suramar city. Collect Twice-Fortified Arcwine (100-150 [currency=1155] in 1 item, Leypetal Bloossom (30-60 [currency=1155]) some gems and so on. I think this place is the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdPyhhe9aLI Will update this part later with more info..
[item=140226] from [item=140218] is also nice option after honored
You can get [item=139890] or [item=139786] from AH. here is a list of all items that you can get from quests/rares/treasures: [item=139786]
Ancient Mana manapool
You can start this world quest with 400 [currency=1155] but more mana will give you more units. And i recommend you to start with as many as you can. The only limitation is [currency=1155] manapool400 [currency=1155] - 8 Withered
650 [currency=1155] - 10 Withered
900 [currency=1155] - 12 Withered
1300 [currency=1155] - 15 Withered
2000 [currency=1155] - 20 WitheredThe problem with [currency=1155] is that you have limited manapool and you need to progress in Suramar story to get manapool of 2000. +500 manapool ~40-50 quest in main suramar storyline so before Building an Army and +500 manapool after honored
Tip: collect 5 items that increase your [currency=1155] manapool by 500 more
