Update: Blizzard added a sidecar-drive to the quest to keep players nearby. If, for any reason that bugs out, you will need to abandon and retake the quest as before.
Prior to the sidecar; and even still should it bug out:
The Alliance version has similar problems as the Horde version comments here. Basically do not run ahead of the quest NPC "Lindie" or it will not complete. Even logging off and back on or heading directly to the stables yourself will not advance the quest. Abandoning the quest and restarting it is the only way to complete it if you did not remain close to Lindie.

Finding Your Way

Idiotic quest. Don't:
- Try to do anything else before letting Lindie take you here.
- Run off, you'll be teleported back into his side-cart or eventually Lindie will despawn.
- Run ahead to the stables on your much faster mount. Lizzie will not be there already like most quests in the game.
- Log off so you can send your character some gold from your main.
If you do any of these things, expect to have to abandon the quest and go back to Lindie on the bridge.
It would have been much better if Lindie just accompanied you and had some triggered dialog to direct players along the path. This is just more lazy quest design, with an attempt to "fix" the issue by teleporting the play back into the cart. For anyone playing an alt, it is just a waste of time.
This is no longer a problem as Lindie/Cork now drive you to your destination.

What to do
Description
Stormwind has a lot to offer adventurers like us, but it's far too big to explore on foot. The captain has arranged for you to receive a mount to help you get around. She said to speak with Curly at the stables in Old Town... but I can't seem to remember the way there. Have no worries, {name}! All we need to do is ask a guard for directions. If you ever need help finding something, the city guards will show you where to go. Let's ask a nearby guard for directions to the stable master in Old Town!
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
