i came here because the in game tooltips don't show the quest progress nor identify which mobs tally up the the quest.
however, i didn't have any issues with freeing the held mobs while mounted
Quest
The Dark Garden
A World of Warcraft quest in Nazjatar. Facts and objectives from the current retail game data.

Your mount flys strangely and wants to dive into the ground when you are doing this quest and are rescuing prisoners mounted.
If other players come in & steal a bunch of kills & objects until there are none left and you haven't filled the progress bar, be patient. They have a kind of long respawn timer (~ 2 minutes I guestimate, feels like longer when you're just waiting), but they do respawn.

What to do
Description
Look, {name}, I know we have bigger battles ahead, but these gardens are horrific. Innocent creatures captured and imprisoned for the naga's amusement. They bring them out, torture them, change them, break them... you get the idea. Help me free those the naga have taken, and punish them for their hubris!
