If you "omg the path ends in the water and idk what to do with myself", follow the wax trail from the beginning, you will need to click some of the wax on the ground to unlock the next part of the quest.
After that, you just need to kill some kobolds and the gem is yours

It's sort of a confusing quest. You don't immediately follow the wax trail and start killing gem-thieves. There are actually two wax puddles you have to click on along the trail down. The first is right next to the quest start. The second is a bit further down (the minimap will show a new blue area after you click on the first puddle. After you've clicked the second, it shows the area to go to kill gem-thieves. I found the gem on the second one I killed — it's just critical that you interact with the two wax puddles first.
The Gem say that it is dropped by a Waterworks Gem-Thief.( They all talk about Glintwick.) I followed the trail and have killed dozens of them counting respawns. I even found Glintwick down in the Waterworks in an Inn. None of them have dropped the gem. Would appreciate any feedback in regards to this.

What to do
Description
This is Ausgazur. His hand is usually full of a selection of his favorite gems. We don't really know what it's like when we go into stasis, but he wanted to spend his last moments contemplating the natural beauty of Azeroth and her bounty. I am afraid someone or something has made off with the jewels he usually holds. Let's look around. See if you can find any clues where they may have gone off to.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

- Tending to Ausgazur
Assigned tasks complete! I'll check back on these folks on my next scheduled patrol. There is one more earthen I must tend to today. He was... he is very special to me. You've been an especially considerate colleague, so I'd like for you to see him. Let us travel west a bit, closer to the falls.
After this quest

- Seeking Ausgazur's Gems
So it was kobolds who made off with Ausgazur's gems. I did not realize the Waterworks was under attack. Our timing is lucky for the defenders down below! We must get those jewels back!
