Interestingly, I just got this quest from Gila Crosswires at the Alliance Embassy, on a character I leveled purely through the Alterac event. In other words, he's 120 but I only just now did the Battle for Lordaeron quest, then saw this on my way to Uldum to go to Silithis. So if you wanna get to Mechagon without going through the Nazjatar intro first, check the Embassy and you might also be able to start it there.

    I came as soon as I heard! A mysterious vault has been discovered in Tiragarde. Centuries ago, the last king of the gnomes, King Mechagon, led his followers in search of a mythical land of technology. He left no clue as to where he was headed, and over time his legend faded into history.
