Fun trivia: In astronomy, an eon is exactly 1,000,000,000 years. (1 billion; our planet is roughly 4.5 billion years old, the universe is roughly 13.8 billion years old.)

In geology, they're timespans separated by a major world changing geological event, but the 4 we've been through on earth were 500 million to 2.5 billion years in length. Examples include the formation of the continents and formation of life.

"Many" of something is generally considered 5 or more.

"Many Eons," then, would be roughly the entire age of the Earth or the Universe, give or take a few billion. 2.5 billion to 12.5 billion or more.

Just some fun trivia to have. For no reason. Enjoy the quest.

Description

So, all they gave us was a location and a garbled riddle... But I guess we know where to start. I can picture it now. Once I have Basalteous's knowledge, I will have nobles and merchants lining up outside my house. No, my mansion! The earthen did say southwest, right? I will find the cave and meet you there. Quickly now!

Where to go

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

Where this quest fits

Before this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • For The Love of GemsIsle of Dorn · Level 70-73

Before Dalaran crashed, I was a preeminent expert on gems. But I lost it all--gems, books, scrolls--like everyone else. Imagine my surprise when I learned of a creature named Basalteous that possesses knowledge of gems stretching back before the Sundering. I want that knowledge.

After this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • What We Do For GemsIsle of Dorn · Level 70-73

According to the earthen, we have to lure the spirit. Or disturb it. Or something. The four standing stones they mentioned have depleted elemental cores laying around them. There are igneous elementals outside and on the beach to the north. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
