This quest isn't super intuitive. You pick it up and you see the black blood objects all over the place, you go to loot them and all it does is splatter you with a puff of mist.

I'm not sure if this quest works at all before you complete the quest where you escort the guy into the cave and learn how to get the effect where it allows you to see additional mobs.

First interact with Black Blood Extractors until you have 25 stacks of the Unseeming Shift debuff. This will allow you to see the pink spectral bug mobs you need to kill that actually drop Coagulated Black Blood.

Each group of stacks allows you to see more mobs that potentially drop the Black Blood.

25 is the most that you can have (during this quest) and it seems like the Black Blood has a higher drop rate off the stronger mobs that you see at 25 stacks.

Three Candles for the Elven-kings above the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of shine,
Nine for Candle-Thieves doomed to dark,
One for the Candle King on his Throne of Gold
In the Cleft of Darkflame
One Candle to rule them all, One Candle to see them,
One Candle to bring them all and in its shineness bind them
In the Cleft of Darkflame where the flames are bright.

While sourcing it may not be pleasant, this waxy substance seems like it might make a fine candle. Janky the candlesmith in Gundargaz might be interested in this.
