If this fails to complete when you leave the cave, just run around cave entrance for a bit to get it. It may tell you to run to turnin npc when you leave cave but if "escape the cave" is still at 0/1 then you need to run around cave exit first.

EDIT. even if escape the cave is 1/1, if npc won't credit, just go back to cave entrance

⚠️ Heads up for anyone stuck at the quest marker inside the cave: it won’t complete there.
You actually need to exit the cave entirely and then run around near the entrance, doing a circle or two usually triggers the completion.
Definitely threw me off at first, so hope this saves someone else the confusion.

Where this quest fits

Before this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Bitestone EnclaveHighmountain · Level 10-45

This is an old drogbar enclave that we used to trade with. Now it is a base of operations for their raids. I need more time to gather what is left of our warbraves. Go, enter the enclave, and slay any you find in there. Buy us the time we need to gather our strength.

After this quest

Taken from the storyline's own step order.

  • Get to High GroundHighmountain · Level 10-45

It is no accident that Dargrul attacked the Rivermane in force. It is their farms and their pastures that supply food for the region. Please, get Jale to Thunder Totem. With luck, Mayla will have reinforcements to send to the area. We will rally the survivors here and follow as quickly as we can.
