You know, if he already -knew- this was going to happen, it would have been nice if he had given us any warning before letting us plant that tree.

When you just picked up the quest from Valewalker Farodin, you'll see two ways: stairs leading up and the broken wall with pass to underground, you have to go down, there you'll see a hall with a crystal in the middle. There you'll find sharped crystallized branches [item=139340] can be gathered from. After you done, get back to the portal, where you'll be able to turn up the quest to Farodin.

When you're done with the quest. don't run back to the portal and hop through it, wonder why he still has a gray ?, look at the map and see the quest ? on the map and fly across the zone. You have to go to the portal and wait for him to realize you have the shards and there are six dead shardmaidens (I always feel bad killing the dryads, that little moan is so sad when they die...) like he asked for.
"Do you have the shards?"
Dude, I know you're a crack elf and all, but is your short term memory really that bad? You just followed me around and watched me pick them up not two minutes ago...

What to do
Description
In the hall beyond rests the bones of the failed arcan'dor. I will take fragments of the crystallized tree and attempt to read them. We must discover the root cause of this destruction. Only then do we have any hope of preventing this disaster from repeating itself.
Where to go
Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.
