Theotar will accompany you for the three missions he offers, Theotar's Mission, Unbearable Light, and My Terrible Morning.
There is a bar over his head indicating his mental state. As he is exposed to sun light, his mental health will decrease. When it reaches zero, he will become incoherent and start screaming infrequently.
You can try to keep to the shadows around the edges of the valley to keep the bar from going lower. His mental state does not seem to have any effect on the success of the mission or your ability to turn in quests!
So I wouldn't worry too much if you cannot keep the bar above zero.

Kill the ghouls to south first and grab light Impalement crystal to make fight easier
For ease of your own sanity, accept and complete the other two missions first, Unbearable Light and Theotar's Mission before picking up My Terrible Morning.
BTW, no matter what you do, Theotar's willpower will drop to zero by the time My Terrible Morning is completed

What to do
Description
You simply won't believe what happened to me! I was out for my daily stroll when Marquis Pummeler and his band of ruffians assailed me! Amongst the many unfortunate and ungentlemanly behaviors they displayed was destroying my parasol. A tragedy of the highest order! Without it, I'm afraid I'm left quite vulnerable to the oppressive Light that curses this land. The Marquis controls a coveted shaded hideout nearby. Will you avenge my parasol and teach this ruffian some manners?

Where this quest fits
Before this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Chasing Madness
<This wretched shamble of a venthyr mumbles uncontrollably as it claws at the ground. It looks up suddenly and points its finger at you.> An adversary with no ferry cannot be merry unless it is wary! <It seems to be waiting for a response from you.>
After this quest
Taken from the storyline's own step order.
- Unbearable Light
Have you encountered an ash ghoul yet? Wretches crawling on the ground. Jump on everything. Terrible table manners. That is the unfortunate fate awaiting all venthyr exposed to the Light for too long. The overwhelming pain it causes us breaks our willpower, our mind, and finally our body.
