I don't know if there are some of you out there that wonder what all the fuss is about Alcaz Island. After all, the only people who get to "see" it are the Alliance due to this quest: Survey Alcaz Island, and even then it's just a quick fly-by. Horde only really see it if they just happen to fly over it out of curiosity...which is what I did today. There are Black Dragons flying above which you can target, but not kill. 60+ Elite Hydras and Naga are down below. In a small settlement near a flying machine you find gnomes, humans, and dwarves called "Minions of Weavil".

From Warcraft Less Traveled:
"Alcaz Island is a forgotten destination that hides the still-dangerous raid boss, Doctor Weavil. The Doctor was once feared as a 25-person raid encounter introduced as part of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands quest chain. Long before Dr. Weavil was there, Alcaz Island is where the King of Stormwind was being held by the Defias Brotherhood and other conspirators. There was a quest chain that was never finished that would have led to his discovery."

It was initailly rumored that Dr. Weavil would disappear with the Cataclysm expansion, but he was still there as I poked around in the building that had more "Minions of Weavil". I found this "evil" little gnome upstairs, sleeping on a bed. He has 326K HP and 492K MP. So I went ahead and started fighting him. As an 85, he didn't pose any threat to me...but he drops no loot, so killing him is kind of pointless.

However, with Theramore getting sacked by Garrosh in the Mists of Pandaria expansion (and therefore the Alliance quest to explore Alcaz may vanish), Dr. Weavil and his minions may end up going the way of the Dodo (I have no confirmation one way or the other, this is just speculation). Either way, you might want to take the time and explore this interesting little forgotten island.

Just a little bit of Vanilla WoW history to ponder. ^_^

And if you are curious to find out more little "hidden" secrets about this game, visit the podcast at http://warcraftlesstraveled.com/ (which isn't getting updated anymore :( ...but there are still lots of fun things to listen and learn about from the old podcasts...)

You can discover some interesting things.

After completion...

Lady Jaina Proudmore says: Perhaps I should explain...
Lady Jaina Proudmore says: I had arranged for a secret summit between Warchief Thrall and King Wrynn, here in Theramore.
Lady Jaina Proudmore says: The King was to travel here by ship, in secret. But the ship never arrived, and King Wrynn disappeared.
Lady Jaina Proudmore says: Your help enabled us to connect the Defias to the mastermind behind the abduction, Onyxia, who was posing as a member of the royal court.
Lady Jaina Proudmore says: Meanwhile, the king managed to escape his captors, and returned to Stormwind to deal with Onyxia.
Lady Jaina Proudmore says: I will send word that you have discovered the link to the Defias. I was a fool to think them broken with the defeat of Edwin Van Cleef, and King Wrynn will want to make an example of all who remain.

What to do

StorylineDustwallow Marsh, step 32 of 83

Description

It looks like Renn's hunch about Alcaz Island was right. We need to survey that island, but it would take a whole brigade of troops to fight our way in there. Theramore's defenses can't weather such a hit, so I've arranged with Cassa Crimsonwing, the apprentice to Theramore's gryphon master, to allow you to use one of her beasts to survey Alcaz from the air. Alcaz Island holds the key to the mystery of the Defias' involvement in this kidnapping.

Pins are the quest’s own POI points from the current retail client, projected onto the in-game zone map. The game marks one blob as the quest’s turn-in; the rest are objective areas. Points that fall outside a map’s window are dropped rather than guessed at.

You must bring news of our findings to Lady Jaina without delay! If the Defias were transporting a prisoner, there's no telling who it might be or if the person is still alive! One thing is for certain, <name>. The Defias wouldn't go to all this trouble for some petty grudge.

After this quest

  • Proof of TreacheryDustwallow Marsh · Level 15-30

Although Onyxia has been exposed and removed from the court, the Defias who carried out her plan must be punished. Carry word to Grand Admiral Jes-Tereth in Stormwind castle that the Defias are the ones who carried out the Varian's kidnapping.
